BIO
“During my childhood, my mom worked as a hairdresser and my dad as a waiter. I grew up observing.
Observing the transformation of those ladies hair at the salon and the transformation of the husbands drinking wine while waiting at my father’s bar.”
Óscar González (he/him), aka Óscar Barbosa, born in 1986 in Mérida, Spain. I am a photographer and visual artist living and working in Berlin since 2011. I graduated in BA Art History in Salamanca University, Spain (2009) and completed my artistic training with a Superior Degree Vocational Diploma in Photography, Image and Sound, Salamanca, IES Rodríguez Fabrés (2011), focusing on analogue photography, old analogue processes and lighting studies for photo and spectacles.
As a photographer, I have been working on my personal projects since 2009, when I started deepening my passion for this art form. My work has been focused on documentary photography, working mostly with film photography, developing and following the whole process myself. Since moving to Berlin in 2011, I have been combining different creative jobs with collaborations within the free art scene of the city, connecting with artists and collectives. My work in this area has been more prolific in the last couple of years, becoming a long term artistic collaborator with the queer performance collective ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS.
Our work together started with Tante Tod and the fraudulent delay of sadness (2020), which was followed by Karelia(2021), The Crossing (2022) and HomeComing – Greatest Hits! (2022), a compendium of photography, portraits, as well as a video art piece called “Onai, sinárra, ioidar” (“alone, quite, strange”), a very personal work based on a reflection about queer identity and the queer tonge damiá. All these works have been a mix of documentation and creative production that was used for promotion of the Ballhaus Ost Theater in Berlin and has also been published in zines and catalogs.
2023 opened a new chapter in my work and life, as I am focusing on his own journey as an artist. My work has been selected for various collective exhibitions: “The Blue Room” and “P**** All about cats” at The Ballery, in Berlin Schöneberg; “Play with me” at Lite Haus, work selected for the “48 Stunden Neukölln”, the largest independent art festival in Berlin Neukölln.
In March of 2024 I took part in the “Old Mine Art Residency”, where I deepened the concepts of identity, roots and the sense of belonging. As a result of this, I have been selected and nominated for the Art Prize at the Altonale Festival 2024 in Hamburg, Germany.
